Custom eggs cartons have become a trade-mark for MHf. We're not talking custom from the manufacturer, but rather custom from the farm. Each carton is hand-stamped, and that takes a bit of time. If you're so inclined to return clean egg cartons, we'd be grateful.

Layers raised on the farm are dual-purpose (eggs & meat) and cold-hardy with a bent toward free-range. The flock follows the cattle through all the pastures foraging on native grasses, alfalfa (good for bone health), clover and all the bugs they can catch. During the day they come and go as they like from the portable hen house, but nighttime finds them closed in to protect them from predators. Current breeds include: Ameraucana, Australorp, Buckeye, Cochin, Delaware, Maran, Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Welsummer, Wyandotte.
Pastured Layers
Farm-fresh eggs are loaded with vitamins & nutrients and have out-of-this-world flavor! Dark golden yolks stand straight up in the skillet and add unique color to your recipes while thick whites make omelets and meringues light & fluffy. Shells vary from blue-green to olive and cream to dark brown - some are even spotted.

Enjoy fresh chicken straight from the pasture! Every day our meat flock is moved to fresh ground giving the birds access to pastures grasses, clover, alfalfa (good for bone health) and all the bugs they can catch.

Birds are butchered at eight weeks which takes place several times each spring and fall with pick up available that same day after 5 pm. Dates for 2012 are yet to be determined.

There are two approaces to a healthy garden: treat the plant or treat the soil.

Treat the plant: remove pests manually or chemically. Pests are drawn to plants weakened by their growing conditions. If growing conditions are not corrected, pests return each year. Treating the plant is a temporary solution.

Treating the soil develops the proper balance of minerals & nutrients for a healthy plant and bountiful harvest. Treating the soil addresses the growing conditions: a long-term solution.

MHf prefers treating the soil. Our journey to a healthy garden may include crop rotation, green manures, animal manures, moon planting, weed control, using varieties that thrive in our zone and knowing when & how to harvest.

Of Irish heritage, Dexters are the perfect option for this small farm for several reasons. First, triple purpose: milk, meat and draft. Second, characteristics: mild temperament, friendly curiosity and small body frame. Third, they're just simply fun to have around.

Personalities vary in the herd just like in humans. For the most part they don't mind human contact. In fact, a few absolutely adore affection and will approach us for their daily rub down. They consider it part of daily chores. Maintaining close contact fosters a gentle, stress-free herd which equates to tender meat.

Grazing practices are currently transitioning to mob grazing which breaks the land into daily paddocks. Each day the herd will be moved to a new paddock with plenty of food. Paddocks may be visited two or three times a year, depending on rainfall. Having enough food within a short distance assures that the animal has no need to wander the entire field for food. which, again, keeps the meat tender.

Beef. Grass-fed & Grass-finished
By design, cows are herbivores. When kept on their intended diet, the result is quality meat that's high in omega-3's and low in fat. Dexter beef has a dark, rich color and very unique taste when compared to other breeds. Learn more about the benefits of grass-fed meat by clicking here.

Roots to tops...spring to fall...the garden is always in transition. While each year and each season brings new challenges, we do our best to offer a variety of produce throughout the growing season. The fall garden, though, is the most reliable and most productive.
Vegetables
What's the difference between a good recipe and a great recipe? Fresh herbs. Try them in salads for added texture and flavor. Make your own meat rubs or marinades. Steep them for a soothing cup of tea or pour the hot tea over ice cubes for a crisp summer perk. Even the flowers can be used!
Herbs
Ground fruits, bush fruits and tree fruits all have a place on the farm. While some types are in greater quantities, we strive to offer them as the seasons dictate.

Q:  Which one is the fruit: olive, bell pepper, tomato, squash, strawberry?
A:   All of the above.

Were you fooled? Click here for an explanation.
Fruit
Fresh or freshly dried, MHf herbs lend themselves abundantly to home-made products. Bread recipes are determined by the herbs actually growing in our garden and vary from season to season.
What a wonderful way to enjoy fresh flavor throughout the year. Most of the fruits and veggies are harvested from our garden, but some ingredients grow wild on the farm. Availability is dictated by the abundance of what's in season.

Business Partners...
Large enough to fish and swim at the same time, the MHf pond offers hours of entertainment. Bring your family, your church, or your company. Access is limited to one party at a time so you'll have the whole pond to yourselves. There is no limit to the number in your party. Please check here for current rates.

Fishing Rebate
MHf customers have asked why we don't offer ready-to-cook fish. The answer is simple: we don't have the time. But if you have the time and knowledge to clean the fish, we'd be happy to partner with you.

In lieu of a leasing fee, please accept a percentage of the total weight caught.
  • 20% provided you clean all the fish caught for MHf
  • 10% if you'd rather not clean fish
There's a holding tank at the pond. Scales, cleaning and storage facilities are available near the barn.

If you're interested, please contact us for harvesting lengths and a tour of the pond.

Drought Update: Since fall of 2010, this part of Kansas has experienced long periods of little or no rain. As a result, our beautiful pond dried up. Recovery is possible with lots of rain and plenty of time. Although, how much of either is anyone's guess. Effective August 2011, the pond is closed until further notice.
